Title A name given to the resource Event 2010 - 2011 Brough Harbour Restoration Project Description An account of the resource Have a look at the well on Dunnet Head, and the oil-share. The lighthouse at Dunnet Head was built in 1831 and the Engineer was Robert Stevenson. First the slipway and store house at Brough harbour were built to service the build and running of the lighthouse. The 'Pole Star' made regular visits with oil for the light and provisions for for the families. A horse and cart would travel the 2 miles 3Qr & 11yds from the store to the lighthouse. As the road up from the harbour was too steep for the horse and cart to carry a full load, a loading platform was constructed where half a load of barrels of oil would be off loaded while the second half of the load was brought up. This was called the 'oils-share' and can still be found next to the road on the right-hand side, not far from the top of the steep track to the harbour on the way up to the lighthouse. On the way to the lighthouse there are milestones at 2 miles and 1 mile. At about 3/4 of a mile, there is a well on the left-hand-side of the road, opposite the Long Loch. This was used to supply fresh water to the light house and to water the horses with the shallow trough for them to drink from. Still Image A static visual representation.
