Four flashes every 30 seconds is the signal given out by Dunnet Head Lighthouse to help seamen safely navigate their way through the Pentland Firth. On Foffy das the foghorn would blast the same message.

Located on the furthest most tip of the Scottish mainland, looking down almost 300ft to the treacherous waters of the Pentland Firth with the Island of Hoy just 7 miles away.

The lighthouse was manned by 3 lighthouse keepers, living with their families in the houses. There was also a full time local assistant and a part time occasional assistant. Together they worked a 24hrs watch system.

The lighthouse was automated on the 31st March 1989 and is now remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board's headquarters in Edinburgh.

The lighthouse was built in 1831 and the engineer was Robert Stevenson.

First the slipway and store house at Brough Harbour were built to service the build and running of the lighthouse

The line was strong cord which had been 'barked', (stained with dye from oak bark) and wound on a vee shaped wooden holder to avoid any kinks or twists and would be about twenty fathoms in length, - deep enough for the Firth!! The young boy in the photo standing on the slip is Billy Calder, Tom's younger son, and his brother Clair is standing up in the Willowbank. Somewhere in that boat is Andrew Milller from Little Wester who would pull and oar with me for Tom, along with 'Wildie and Jock', the tow Stroma men and a friend: enough hands ot make light work of hauling 'Winnie'.
