Bernard and Betty Heath were residents of Brough from 1992 - 2004, during which time they planted over 1400 trees, both hard and soft wood, in an area of ground, on the left going up the hill pas the harbour. They tendered and nurtured the trees which became a well established woodliand in what was a very unpromising area.
After moving in to Thurso, they continued to maintain the woodland until 2007 they felt that they would like to donate it to the community and they did this through the Dunnet Forestry Trust, who already look after Dunnet Forest.
In 201 Dunnet Forestry Trust carried out some major works to make the woodland more accessible to visitors. A hard surface path with board walks, runs around the area. Bird boxes have been put in place and car parking provided. the woodland is protected by deer proof fencing.
This woodland is a great asset tot the community and a habitat that attracts a wide range of wildlife. The cuckoo is an elusive bird which can often be heard in Brough, we think it is in the woodland somewhere.
In June 2011 'Heathsfield' was officially opened by Bernard and Betty. We thank them for their generosity.
